Rolling Stones

Mine Kafon | Callum Cooper from Focus Forward Films on Vimeo.

This short film directed by Callum Cooper tells the story of Mine Kafon – a wind-driven, low cost landmine destroyer developed by Afghan designer Massoud Hassani.
The device, consisting of rubber pads on the end of a radiating array of bamboo rods, costs $40 to manufacture and can sustain up to four landmine blasts. As opposed to current ‘hi-tech’ mine-sweeping which can cost up to $1000 per explosion.

The Great Outdoors

I don't know if its the cold snap, or the fact that Ive been spending so much time indoors with college work, but lately, Ive had an intense craving for the great outdoor...

D(IY)arren

So I have a habit of collecting pictures and framing them, (example) but some of my favourite prints are just too big to frame, not to mention expensive. So I got a few different sized Bulldog clips from a office supply store, pinned some steel nails in the wall, and ta-dah!

All done. I hung up some fairy lights too, they are battery operated and set the mood. I love how it came out, especially since that wall is the first thing you see when you walk into my room... Now I just need something for my back wall, and I have just the thing in mind. More on that later.

Stroke of Genius...

TED talks are just like those Tumblr blogs you get hooked on at 4 in the morning, meaning that when you should be sleeping, you tell yourself just one more video.

And this talk by Jill Bolte Taylor is particularly inspiring.

Living. Now.

Live Now is a really interesting project from designer and illustrator Eric Smith, which he set up after being diagnosed with Cancer. He decided to start a collaborative art project inviting people to live in the moment through beautiful, poetic, earnest artwork that celebrates life. This season, the project was published as a book, the candidly titled Live Now: Artful Messages of Hope, Happiness & Healing.

My invite was probably lost in the mail!

So if I was to say Anna, Andre, Marc and Naomi were all in attendance, the cake had cats on it, and the lady of the hour was flame haired fashion living creative legend, then you would hopefully guess that last weekend saw Vogue's Creative Director, Grace Coddington, celebrate her 70th birthday, yes, 70th.

So Happy Birthday Grace, here's to many many more!

Also I picked up the latest issue of Intelligent Life last week and it it such a great magazine. My iPod died and I was on my way home from Edinburgh (more on that trip later) so I decided to cure my boredom with some good old fashioned reading material. The cover story with Grace is so interesting, and gives a great insight into her fantastic career, and real details how her influence changed the way fashion magazines are styled and produced today.

It Came Form Letter Space

I've never been much of a type fiend, but lately I've been getting a lot of ideas and inspiration for what can be done with a few words. Like these amazing 50's style film posters, designed by Will Staehle for the Type Directors Club.

Elle Collections.... LUST

So last weekend I was down in Cork, just visiting Family, I had intended on doing a bit of shopping, but due to bad timing (and an empty wallet) I just had barely enough time to run into Easons and pick up a magazine for the bus home, and to my delight right inside the door I was greeted by the new issue of ELLE Collections.

At €10.47 its not cheap for a magazine, but then again its so much more than a magazine. Its like the book of inspiration and ideas, each page is more exciting than the next.

It really is a credit to Lorraine Candy, Editor-In-Chief, and acting Creative Director, Tom Meredith. Its just such a shame its only released bi annually. Oh well, only 6 more months til Elle Collections A/W comes out

Lorraine seems happy that I liked the issue. Hi Lorraine. *Waves*

I Heart Paper Clips!

Cute huh? And surprisingly simple to make, you just bend the paper clip. Be cute for Valentine's.
